Hamas killed 16 Israeli soldiers in different parts of Gaza, in a series of clashes that show the growing challenges the Israeli army faces as it attempts to advance into urban areas of the Palestinian enclave.
The greatest loss of life occurred on Tuesday the 31st, when an armored personnel carrier was hit by an anti-tank guided missile, killing 11 soldiers and injuring several others. In a different raid, several Israeli soldiers were killed when their tank hit a mine.
In another reported case, two soldiers died when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the building where they were staying. This Wednesday, the 1st, a recruit was killed by a mortar fired at the border.
