Palio 99: engine, details, photos, prices, consumption, etc.

The Palio 99 was the fullest year/model in Fiat’s compact hatch portfolio, with numerous versions and engines, appearing shortly before the first visual update, the model was diversified.

This was just the beginning, after all, the Fiat Palio – like its brothers Fiat Siena, Fiat Palio Weekend and Fiat Strada – would get several styling updates, as well as engine and even gearbox.

Launched in 1996, the Palio still used the original Fiasa and Sevel engines, the latter imported from Argentina, while the former was made in Betim-MG.

The highlight of the Palio 99 was the Citymatic version, which had an automatic clutch, well before the Dualogic automated transmission, attached to the hatch many years later.

The Fiasa had 1.0 and 1.5 liter versions, while the Sevel was 1.6 8V, which was offered with both single-point and multi-point injection.

Palio 99 – details

The Fiat Palio 99 was offered in several versions, starting with the Citymatic, which had an automatic clutch, in addition to the ED and EDX entry versions, apart from EL, ELX and EX.

Still with the original look of the launch, the Palio 99 had a simple look, with large headlights and a tapered grille, with a body with fluid lines and a contemporary look, still devoid of more modern systems.

With 3,735 m in length, 1,614 m of width, 1,445 m of height and 2,361 m of wheelbase, the Palio had 280 liters in the trunk, a good size for its proposal and suitable to rival the VW Gol, leader at the time. .

Developed by the Fiat Design Center in collaboration with the Italian studio I.DE.A, the Palio maintained its essence in 1999, using Fiasa and Sevel engines.

The Fiasa engine is an old engine, made in 1976 especially for Brazil, with a cast iron block and aluminum head, but with a bad reputation for belt breakage and valves being run over.

Very simple, the Palio 99 could also have air conditioning, power steering, 13 or 14-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, fog lights, green windows, gradient windshield and an integrated audio system with cassette player.

With dual airbags and ABS brakes, the Palio was born ready to face the new challenges of the next decade and its main rival, Volkswagen.

Inside, the Palio 99 still had the original panel, with analog dials that were simpler in options like ED and customized with tachometer on the ELX, for example.

Having woven into the doors of most versions, the Palio satisfied the appeal for a more complete car, even if it was cheap compared to larger ones, such as the Fiat Tipo.

Palio 99 – engine

In the Palio 99, the Fiasa 1.0 engine had 8V and delivered 61 horsepower with 8.1 kgfm, even in the Citymatic version, while the 1.5 8V had 77 horsepower and 12.4 kgfm.

Both were multi-point, being a ploy by Fiat to modernize the smaller engines in cheaper cars rather than starting with the larger engines in the brand’s more expensive cars.

That’s why the Palio EL 1.6 had its Sevel engine, produced in Argentina, with single-point injection in its 8V cylinder head.

However, the Palio ELX 1.6 had the same engine, but with multipoint injection, thus having 92 horses against 82 of the single point, in addition to 13.0 kgfm in the first and 13.3 kgfm in the second, which had even more power.

These two engines would die on the second-upgrade Palio, replaced by the Fire and Family I (GM) engines.
