Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us franchise and president of the Naughty Dog studio, confirmed that he has a concept for the third game in the saga and believes that there is another chapter to the story.
In an excerpt from Grounded II, a new documentary that details the development of The Last of Us Part II, Druckmann revealed that he has been thinking about a third game for years, but had never had an idea that excited him to make it. Now, he says that has changed.
Druckmann says he doesn’t have a story yet, but he has the concept for it. According to him, it’s as exciting as 1 and 2, but it’s something independent that can also connect the other games. So, he feels like there’s one more chapter for The Last of Us.
The Last of Us was released in 2023 at the end of the PlayStation 3’s life cycle, kicking off one of Sony’s biggest franchises. In the plot, Joel needs to travel with Ellie across the United States after a pandemic caused by a fungus sweeps the world. In August 2021, it received a remake for PlayStation 5.
The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020 to critical acclaim, but divided players due to controversial plot decisions. Along with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and Elden Ring, it is one of the most awarded games in history, winning the title of “Game of the Year” at The Game Awards 2020. Last month, a remastered version was released for PlayStation 5.
In January 2023, HBO premiered The Last of Us series with Pedro Pascal in the role of Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. The second season has been confirmed and will feature director Mark Mylod from the acclaimed production Succession.
