Although a new episode of the Metro video game saga is still in the works at 4A Games, a pre-episode called Metro Awakening produced by Vertigo Games was shown during Sony’s State of Play.
With an unprecedented story written by maestro Dmitri Gloukhovski himself (author of the Metro 20XX book series), Metro Awakening VR would like to be much more than a simple pre-episode whose only added value would be VR. The novelist declares that “this origin story is essential to me. I have the impression of returning to the fundamentals and roots of the series, but now with what VR can bring.”
The series’ formula will not be changed with Metro Awakening, which will maintain the FPS style that combines survival, suffocating atmosphere, a good dose of exploration and a solid narrative. The protagonist will be Serdar, a doctor by profession who goes in search of his missing wife in the corridors of the Moscow metro. The action will take place in 2028, five years before the events of Metro 2033.
Scheduled for PS VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3 and SteamVR, Metro Awakening is targeting a release window of 2024, a date that is still undefined.
