Fernando Alonso crossed the finish line of the Dutch GP in seventh place, but was ‘rewarded’ with Carlos Sainz’s penalty and moved up to sixth place on the timesheet. After the dispute in Zandvoort, this Sunday (4), the two-time world champion celebrated the result and praised Alpine’s performance.

“I really enjoyed it. I think today was probably the best race of the year as far as driving is concerned. Very demanding, physical. For us it was 71 qualifying laps today. In the beginning we had to overtake AlphaTauri on the track, and then the stint 40 laps on the hard tires were like qualifying. Just when I thought the race was under control, the safety car happened and ‘reset’ everything. Very good strategy from the team to use the hard compounds so we can take advantage of the pace of the car, so a lot of gratitude,” said Alonso.

Alonso started on the soft tires and, after 12 laps, put on the hard compounds on his Alpine. After 35 laps, the two-time world champion made another stint short with the red track tires, to close the race with another 25-lap old soft game.

The Spaniard, once again, was very complimentary of the French team’s performance at Zandvoort and highlighted the advantage over McLaren.

“It was spectacular, the car was good all weekend. We managed to use the pace thanks to the strategy today. In the end, with the safety car, the others stopped for a fresher set of tires and I was a little worried. problems keeping them behind thanks to our speed on the straight. Good double score for the team compared to McLaren and congratulations to all.”

Formula 1 returns next weekend, between the 9th and 11th of September, to close the triple round and the 2022 European leg with the Italian GP, in Monza.
