The Brazilian men’s basketball team got off to a good start in the Copa America dispute, which is being played in Recife. This Friday, at Arena Geraldo, the team led by coach Gustavo De Conti, Gustavinho, defeated Canada in its debut by 72-63 (32-24 in the first half), for Group A of the competition.
Brazil’s biggest standout was forward Leo Meindl, who got good numbers with 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists. The Brazilian scorer was point guard Yago Mateus with 13 points, in addition to three rebounds and one assist. The guard Georginho and the forward Lucas Dias contributed with 10 and nine points, respectively. Veteran point guard Marcelinho Huertas had nine points and three rebounds.
Brazil will return to court this Saturday, at 8:10 pm (from Brasilia), to face Colombia. On Monday, at the same time, the opponent will be Uruguay at the close of the group stage.
The match was marked by a lot of balance, especially in the third and fourth periods. In the latter, the Brazilian National Team improved its performance, after a period of instability, and the balls from three fell – mainly with Yago Mateus and Lucas Dias. Brazil managed to open 10 points of advantage in the last minutes and guaranteed the victory in the debut.
The first phase of the Copa America has three groups of four teams, which face each other. The two best teams from each will go through to the playoffs, in addition to the two best third-placed teams. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final are decided in a single game. The decision is scheduled for the next 11th.
