Dutchman Max Verstappen took pole for his home GP in the Netherlands, and that made Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko quite pleased. However, Marko expected more from the team’s other driver, Sergio Perez.

“It was incredibly exciting. Max warmed up the tires very quickly on the first lap, which wasn’t ideal, but on the second it was fine,” Marko told Sky Germany. “We would have been very happy if Perez hadn’t rotated in the end. Ferrari was much stronger here than in Spa,” he said.

The gap between Verstappen and Charles Leclerc was minimal after the final lap, but pole position will be important in Sunday’s race at the Zandvoort circuit, where overtaking is not always easy. Verstappen managed to come back strong after a disappointing Friday, but the same cannot be said for teammate Perez. The Mexican ended up running and touching the guardrail at the end of Q3, and will have to settle for fifth on the grid on Sunday.

“Max learned to drive fast and save equipment at the same time. According to our calculations, Perez would have been third. He needs to show up faster on Friday, but we believe he can fight for second in the championship,” concluded Marko.

Marko’s criticism of Sergio Perez has become almost constant. This creates a strange situation, as the Mexican is already confirmed at Red Bull for next year, and these criticisms obviously don’t create a climate of the best internally in the team.
