Saturday (3) in Holland started very well for Brazil. Caio Collet started from 4th place for the Formula 3 sprint race in Zandvoort, left Zak O’Sullivan and Grégoire Saucy behind and jumped positions right at the start and, after overtaking Juan Manuel Correa on the fifth lap, opened distance to cross the line of finish in first place in the contest.
This was the Brazilian’s second victory of the 2022 F3 season – the first also came in a Saturday race in Hungary. In a dominant way in Holland, the MP driver received the checkered flag 4s before Correa, who was in second place.
The ART pilot, by the way, won his first podium in the category — and he celebrated a lot. Correa, as is known, was involved in the very serious accident at Spa-Francorchamps in 2019, for Formula 2, which broke both of his legs and left him in an induced coma – in addition to causing the death of Frenchman Anthoine Hubert. The Ecuadorian-born American also suffered serious injuries to his lung and spine, in addition to the risk of amputating his legs, and had to undergo 20 surgeries during a period of intense rehabilitation before being able to return to motor racing.
Carlin’s O’Sullivan completed the race in third – securing his second podium of the year. Jonny Edgar, Saucy, Isack Hadjar, Victor Martin, Sebastian Montoya, Jak Crawford and Roman Stanek rounded out the top 10 list.
After the lights went out on the grid, Collet immediately moved up to 3rd place, leaving Saucy behind, and soon passed O’Sullivan as well. Meanwhile, Correa — who started from pole in the sprint — managed to hold the lead in the race.
Eventually, thanks to the mobile wing, the Brazilian was able to overtake Correa on the fifth lap – in a beautiful maneuver at turn 3 – and, just two laps later, he was already 1s4 ahead of this Saturday’s rival.
The Brazilian added 11 points to the account with this Saturday’s result: 10 for the victory and 1 more for the fastest lap of the dispute.
Meanwhile, title contenders Stanek and Oliver Bearman battled it out for the final points position — with the Trident driver winning. Arthur Leclerc, hampered by the circumstances of qualifying practice, started from 20th and climbed the field to finish 12th.
For the main race, which takes place this Sunday, Collet will start from 9th position, with Zane Maloney starting from pole. The second race of the F3 Netherlands round is scheduled for 3:45 (Brasília, GMT -3). O BIG PRIZE tracks all the activities of the 2022 Formula 3 season.
