Brazilian and Russian will face off on October 22 for the vacant lightweight belt
With a winning streak of ten fights, Islam Makhachev goes packed in search of the highest place in the lightweight (70 kg) of the UFC. In edition number 280, which takes place on October 22, in Abu Dhabi (UAE), the Russian faces Charles Oliveirain a duel that is worth the vacant belt of the category, and, at the same time that he is confident for one of the main fights of 2022, he also recognizes that the rival is not just any fighter.
After accusing Charles of being afraid to face him and ignoring him to look for theoretically easier matches against Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz – popular fighters, but in a bad shape in the MMA -, Makhachev put the ‘trash talk’ aside for a moment. In an interview with ESPNthe Russian praised ‘Do Bronx’, praised his quality in both striking and grappling, and projected a well fought fight in the Octagon.
However, even admitting that the former UFC lightweight champion has a high level, Makhachev guarantees that he is prepared to face the challenge. After winning ten straight fights, being rarely threatened by opponents and leaving the Octagon with rare injuries or accumulated damage, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s friend and training partner promises to make Charles, who is at his peak in MMA, a statistic in his record, and dominant form.
“If Charles arrives in Abu Dhabi in great shape, it will be like irons touching, sparks, you know? When I touch Charles, there will always be sparks if he’s in great shape. I will master it. It won’t be an easy fight, because this guy is a champion, he has good skills. He is skilled in grappling, in striking, it will be a very good fight. I’m ready. It doesn’t matter how many rounds it’s going to be, where it’s going to be, striking, grappling, wrestling. I will be ready in all sectors. This is my goal, this is my dream. That’s why I’m going to train so hard to arrive in Abu Dhabi in very good shape”, declared the Russian.
Islam Makhachev, 30, has established himself as one of the best lightweight fighters in the UFC. Currently, the Russian has ten consecutive victories and is in fourth position in the category ranking. During his career at the company, the professional was appointed by the MMA community as a kind of new Khabib Nurmagomedov, his friend and training partner, due to his fighting style and dominance in the Octagon. His most important triumphs were over Arman Tsarukyan, Bobby Green, Dan Hooker, Davi Ramos, Drew Dober, Gleison ‘Tibau’ and Thiago Moisés.
