Victoria Azarenka, three-time finalist of the US Open (2012, 2013 and 2020) seems to be slowly recovering a level of play that he hasn’t found in a few months and this Thursday confirmed the return to the third round of the US Open, winning a tense encounter and that was a topic of conversation for non-tennis-related issues.

The Belarusian, number 26 in the world, defeated the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, 65th WTA, 6-2 and 6-3, and at the end of the match the 21-year-old refused to greet her in the net, offering her the racket for a quick touch (without eye contact), which confirmed the tense atmosphere between the two.

Kostyuk has openly criticized Azarenka in recent months for her stance in dealing with the Russian (Belarusian-backed) invasion of Ukraine, having considered herself ignored by the former world number one during various stages of the process. “She only talks to tennis players of another status, I always felt ignored”.

The young Ukrainian rebelled against Azarenka’s participation in an exhibition event in support of Ukraine last week and the US Open ended up removing the tennis player from the list of participants.

Azarenka will now face the winner of the match between the Spanish Paula Badosanumber four in the world, and Croatian Petra Martic.
