New York (USA) – One of the most awaited games since the draw for the US Open bracket is confirmed: Scotsman Andy Murray and Italian Matteo Berrettini will meet again, this time in the third round of the North American Grand Slam. Both, however, needed a turnaround on Wednesday.

Even in front of local guest Emilio Nava, 203rd in the world at age 20, the 2012 champion lost the first set and only then found the best pace. He finished the game 5/7, 6/3, 6/1 and 6/0, marking his best record at Flushing Meadows since the 2016 quarterfinals. He did not play in the tournament in 2017 and 2019.

Berrettini, in turn, had a lot more work than expected against Frenchman Hugo Grenier, 119th in the rankings and who had lost in the final round of the qualifiers. After taking 2/6, seed 13 reacted with 6/1, 7/6 (7-4) and 7/6 (9-7), with a remarkable total of 75 winners, 34 forehands and 17 aces. The Italian has not lost before the round of 16 in the last three editions of the tournament, having reached the semi in 2019 and the quarterfinals last year.

This will be the fourth match between the two. Murray won on the hard court in Beijing in 2019 but was beaten twice in a row on grass, at Queen’s last season and in the final in Stuttgart two months ago.

At 35 years old and currently 51st in the world, Murray could finally return to the top 40 if he reaches the round of 16 of the US Open, a position that the former number 1 has not occupied since he ranked 39th in May 2018.

In his match on Wednesday, Murray had ups and downs with his first serve hit rate, which dropped to 30% over the course of the second set, but Nava was rarely able to return with quality after the opening series. “I was able to go deeper into the ball,” he explained.

An essential point of his style, Berrettini also did not use the first serve well and was often below 50% in the match, with 33% on average in the second set. But after the two missed services in the opening set, he only offered break-points to the Frenchman before the second tie-break.
