Rome Italy) – After defeating the promising young Mirra Andreeva in her debut, Spanish Paula Badosa achieved another important victory and is classified for the third round of the WTA 1000 in Rome. Finishing the women’s round this Thursday, the former number 2 in the world and current 126th beat the North American Emma Navarro, scoring 1/6, 6/4 and 6/2 in 1h56 of the match.

With the result, Badosa equals his best campaign in the entire 2024 season, repeating the third round of the Australian Open in January. Since then, the 26-year-old player has played seven tournaments and has never managed to win two matches in a row. Furthermore, she reaches her third triumph of the year over an opponent from the top 50, after beating the Russians Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova, then 46th placed, in the second phase in Melbourne, and Mirra Andreeva, currently 40th placed, in the opening round in Rome in the last third.

Their last notable campaign was the quarter-finals in the Italian capital last season. Trying to repeat her good performance at Foro Italico, she will face Russian Diana Shnaider in the third round, who surprised her compatriot Liudmila Samsonova with a 6/1, 6/3 victory. This will be the fourth meeting between them, and Badosa leads the record 2-1, with triumphs in the har-tru of Charleston in 2023 and on the clay of Stuttgart last April. Shnaider got the better of Hua Hin, in February, after winning the first set and counting on the Spaniard’s withdrawal in the second half.

Vondrousova debuts with victory

Semi-finalist of the tournament in 2020 and seed number 6, Czech Marketa Vondrousova had a hard time, but secured a place in the third round. She needed 2h26 to beat the Romanian Ana Bogdan by 6/2, 3/6 and 6/4 and now she will have another Romanian ahead of her, the 28th main entrant Sorana Cirstea, who is coming off a victory over the Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova by 7/5 and 6/0.

The record between the two is favorable to Cirstea, who won three of the four previous matches. After Vondrousova’s triumph at the 2021 Australian Open, the Romanian built an undefeated streak against her opponent, winning the WTA 500 in St. Petersburg in 2022 and the WTA 1000 in Miami in 2023 and Dubai in the current season.
