The controversies involving the actions of the FIA stewards continue in Formula 1. After the Miami GP, the decision not to punish Lewis Hamilton for forcing other drivers to swerve, angered Fernando Alonso and reignited criticism of supervision in the category.

Joaquín Verdegay, former F1 commissioner, shares the Aston Martin driver’s dissatisfaction. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper ‘Diario’, he classified the situation as ‘worrying’ and lamented the lack of discretion in penalties.

“I don’t see discrimination against the Spanish, what there is is a lack of control and a loss of direction. This worries me and makes me sad. For example, why do races stop in the rain? I feel like we are killing the category. I don’t think anyone likes racing like that right now,” Verdegay said.

Verdegay also commented on Alonso’s complaint in Miami, which suggested favoring Hamilton. “Of course Alonso’s complaints are legitimate. The regulations may be difficult to interpret, but he doesn’t want everything to be punished. I wouldn’t have punished Alonso in China and I wouldn’t have punished Hamilton in Miami,” he said.

For the former commissioner, the races are becoming primarily a spectacle, to the detriment of sporting competition. “Racing is becoming more of a party than a sporting spectacle. It gives the impression that the Miami GP is an ‘event’ organized to sell trays of nachos”, he concluded.
