Madrid (Spain) – Eliminated in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, João Fonseca from Rio de Janeiro left with positive feelings from his first tournament at this level. Even right after the defeat to British Cameron Norriein the second round of the competition, the young tennis player took stock of his participation in Caixa Mágica and was pleased with his performance in the two matches he played.

“A very good week, the first time I’m playing in a Masters 1000. It was one of my dreams come true, playing with these great tennis players who are where I want to be. It was a really cool experience for me to be able to be in the same environment as them and be treated like a player and showing my potential too. Happy to be in this environment, I took away many positive points”, analyzed Fonseca.

The youngest person to win a Masters 1000 game since 2018, beating North American Alex Michelsen in the first round, the 17-year-old from Rio did not maintain his level against Norrie, especially in the first set, in which he made too many mistakes and was dominated by the Brit.

“The game with Norrie, a former top 20 player, is a very tough game, he knows very well what to do, he is a very experienced and very smart guy. There are a lot of pitfalls, but I’m happy with the sneakers I showed this week. I feel like I’m improving, but I still have a lot of things to improve. Now it’s time to get back to work for the next fights”, analyzed Fonseca after the defeat with partial scores of 6/1 and 6/4.

“Coming back to the game, in the first set I was a little more tense, which is normal, I wasn’t feeling very well. I couldn’t feel good the whole game technically, but in the second set I focused on my serves, although he was managing to neutralize well, and I tried in every way. I almost got the break at the end, but it happened, he played really well and has total merit”, he concluded.
