Madrid (Spain) – Best player in these first months of the circuit, the Italian Jannik Sinner entered the dispute in Madrid as seed 1 for the first time in a Masters 1000, making his status valid this Saturday, in which he debuted with a devastating victory over compatriot Lorenzo Sonego.

“I know him well because we played in the Davis Cup together and we are good friends. I tried to concentrate because this type of match is complicated to play. I felt very good and solid on the court”, said the world number 2, who will now face Russian Pavel Kotov.

“I am very happy to return to Madrid. Last year I lost the tournament and now I’m excited. I love the crowd’s atmosphere, I’m focused on playing good tennis and we’ll see how the tournament evolves”, commented the Italian

Despite the great form presented so far, Sinner remembers that his record in the competition is not the best, now with four wins and two defeats. In his third appearance, the Italian speaks cautiously about his title chances.

“I really don’t know if I’m the favorite to win. I will try to improve day by day because this tournament is something different due to the altitude. I try to adapt, but today I felt comfortable on the track. We’ll see later,” said Sinner, who has already lifted three cups this year.

“I dream big, I dream to win as many titles as possible. I made a lot of sacrifices by leaving home at 14 and it’s still in my head. I’m working hard every day to become a better player day after day, which is the main objective”, added the ATP vice-leader.
