Carlos Sainz may have to decide his future in Formula 1, even before Red Bull Racing defines its driver lineup for 2025. The Spaniard is looking for a new team after losing his seat at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton next season.

Red Bull needs to choose Max Verstappen’s teammate, as Sergio Perez’s contract ends at the end of 2024. Sainz impressed with victory in the Australian GP, which increased Red Bull Racing’s interest.

However, Red Bull is in no rush to replace Perez, and has not yet confirmed whether it will actually release the Mexican. According to journalist Lawrence Barretto, the team prefers to wait until the middle of the year to make a decision, which could be too late for Sainz, who risks being left without a team in 2025.

“My sources say that Sainz was already on Red Bull’s shortlist before the Australian GP,” Barretto wrote for the official F1 website. “The problem for Sainz is that Red Bull are in no rush to pick Verstappen’s 2025 teammate. They are believed to be willing to wait until mid-year, which could be too long for Sainz to risk losing out. another opportunity.”

Red Bull wants to give Perez more time to prove that he deserves to stay for a fifth season. The Mexican has already shown that he can help the team win the constructors’ championship without hindering Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo, RB driver, was considered the favorite to replace Perez in 2025. However, the Australian has been underperforming his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, even putting his stay in F1 at risk.

Despite this, Barretto states that Ricciardo is still seen as a potential candidate at Red Bull, a long-standing desire of the team since hiring the driver for the then AlphaTauri (currently RB) last season, when he replaced Nyck de Vries in the middle of the year.

Like Ricciardo, Sainz was Verstappen’s teammate at Toro Rosso (currently RB) in 2015. Since Ricciardo’s departure, no driver has managed to match Verstappen at Red Bull.

Barretto analyzes that moving to Red Bull would be risky for Sainz. “Red Bull has already shown that if you perform poorly, you can be easily replaced. Furthermore, Verstappen’s status in the team could limit Sainz’s progress,” the journalist wrote.

“On the other hand, he would probably have a car capable of winning every race. And Sainz believes he can surpass Verstappen. Red Bull, in turn, would have a consistent driver. On Sundays like the one in Melbourne, when Verstappen retired, they want the other driver to be able to win, and not be left off the podium, as happened with Perez (who only finished in P5). So far this season, Sainz is proving that he can excel,” concluded Barretto.
