Logistics defined, players registered. Fluminense’s debut in the Libertadores is approaching, but one question still lingers: will Cano travel to Peru or stay in Rio de Janeiro? The Argentine became doubtful for the duel against Alianza Lima, and the “D-day” for his trip to Lima will be this Monday.

Fluminense’s last training session in Brazil will be held at 3:30 pm, at CT Carlos Castilho. The expectation is that Cano will participate in collective activity before the final decision to travel or stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Cano’s presence on the field is highly anticipated by Fluminense. After all, he is not just one of Diniz’s starters – even though he is having a low-key start to the year, with two goals in seven games – but the club’s top scorer in the history of the Libertadores. In the 2023 edition, 13 goals were scored in 12 matches.

In Tricolor’s debut against Sporting Cristal, Cano scored two of the three goals in the 3-1 victory in Peru. Afterwards, he scored a hat-trick in the rout of River Plate. At Maracanã, again against the Peruvian team, he scored Fluminense’s only goal in a 1-1 draw.

After coming up empty in the round of 16, against Argentinos Juniors, Cano scored at least one goal per game until the historic 4th of November. In the quarterfinals, there were three goals against Olimpia – one at Maracanã, two in Paraguay.

With a total of 16 goals for Fluminense in the Libertadores, Cano is already Tricolor’s top scorer in the tournament after two editions played – and an early elimination in 2022. That’s 16 goals in 16 games, which puts him ahead of his idol and current planning director Fred, with 15 achievements in 29 matches.

Fernando Diniz already knows that he will not be able to count on five names in the Libertadores debut. Two absences are due to suspensions: John Kennedy and Diogo Barbosa were sent off on the return leg of the Recopa, at Maracanã, and will serve their absence in the Libertadores debut.

On the physical side, Keno is still unable to go to the field, despite no longer needing the aid of crutches; on March 20, he suffered a sprain in training, but no rupture. Marlon is still recovering from a knee injury and was returned to the care of the medical department.

Ganso, in turn, is still not 100% after feeling pain in his calf on the eve of the Fla-Flu return in Carioca. The measure is preventive, and it is expected that he will be available against Colo-Colo, in the second round of the Libertadores.

Gabriel Pires lives a similar situation to Cano. He has not been ruled out, but his presence in the squad that goes to Lima is still in doubt.

Fluminense will finish its preparations to face Alianza Lima in the Peruvian capital, this Tuesday. Tricolor will do one last training session at the Peru national team’s CT, the same place where they trained in 2023 before joining Sporting Cristal. The Rio team’s debut will be on Wednesday, at 9:30 pm, at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium.
