“I’m very happy to be able to lift the trophy this time. It’s one of the great tournaments and I’m very grateful. This place is special”, celebrated Sinner, who finally won in Miami, after reaching the final in 2021 and 2023.

With this Sunday’s title, Sinner will become number 2 in the world in the next ATP rankings, which will be published this Monday, surpassing Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

The 22-year-old Italian reached the final as a big favorite after a brilliant campaign in Miami. After the shock of the first set lost to the Dutchman Griekspoor in the third round, he continued to grow until he defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals (6-1, 6-2).

In the final, he faced a reborn Dimitrov, who Sinner had already beaten in his last two games this past year, in Miami and Beijing. The Bulgarian, one of the only tennis players on the circuit with a one-handed backhand, is experiencing his second youth at the age of 32.

Comparisons with the myth of Roger Federer and the feeling that he could never live up to the enormous expectations generated by his talent were left behind.

In Florida, Dimitrov was close to perfection in some games, such as the victory over Alcaraz in the quarterfinals (6-2 and 6-4).
