British driver Lewis Hamilton said on his social media this Saturday that his move to Ferrari, announced this week, is the realization of “another childhood dream”. Seven-time world champion Formula 1he will leave Mercedes, the team with which he won six titles in 11 seasons, to race for the Italian team from 2025.
The announcement was surprising, as the 39-year-old driver had signed a new contract with the German team in August 2023. However, he decided to activate a clause that allowed him to leave at the end of the 2024 season.
In his first statements after Thursday’s announcement, Hamilton admitted that “it was a crazy few days, full of a range of emotions.”
“I feel incredibly lucky, after achieving things with Mercedes that I could only have dreamed of as a child, I now have the opportunity to fulfill another childhood dream: driving the red Ferrari,” Hamilton explained in his message.
The Brit considers that, after racing for Mercedes since 2013 and winning everything, it is time to “start another chapter”. However, he stressed that he is focused on the German team for 2024.
“I’m not thinking about 2025 at the moment. My focus is on next season and getting back on track with Mercedes. I am more motivated than ever, fitter and more focused, and I want to help Mercedes win once again (…) and end my partnership with the team on a high,” he added.
The 2024 Formula 1 season begins on March 2 in Bahrain, after three days of pre-season in the same country, from February 21 to 23.
