Understand the reasons that led Sport to bet on Lucas Lima’s return for 2024

Player arrived in Recife this Friday (2) and returns to Sport after more than 10 years

Lucas Lima and the Sport will write a new chapter in the story that began back in 2013. The player, now 33 years old and more experienced, returns to Ilha do Retiro with the mission of repeating the protagonism that helped Leão reach Serie A more than ten years ago . Negotiations for the midfielder’s return involved back and forth, but were concluded this week, with Sport and Santos sharing the midfielder’s wages.

Sport’s first contact took place at the beginning of January, where the club heard that Santos was willing to loan the player out, even sharing his salary. However, at that moment, the player did not accept the offer and the negotiation cooled down. He also turned down offers from other teams.

After the proposals were rejected, it must be said, Santos, who were looking to negotiate him, put Lucas Lima to train with the under-20s, who will even play in a tournament in Qatar.

However, this week, after a new search from Sport, what seemed discarded came to fruition: the parties spoke and, finally, the agreement was sealed.

This agreement, according to Guilherme Falcão, member of Sport’s football management committee, was largely due to the athlete’s desire to play for the club. The director guarantees that Lucas Lima embraced the project and is motivated to return to Ilha do Retiro.

“Lucas still had the shirt he wore here with us (in 2013). He sent us a photo of the mantle and expressed his willingness to put Sport in series A. Much is said about the timing of this negotiation, but it is necessary to understand that there were previous issues in his situation with Santos that needed to be resolved. The player wanted to come. And he is engaged in our project,” the director told NE45.

In addition to the player’s desire, other points were decisive for Sport to seek to bring the midfielder back. And one of them was the draft of Lucas Lima, who, although not at his technical peak, played more than 100 games in the last two years, something noted by the management and which added to this equation due to the athlete’s return.

And another key player in this negotiation was coach Mariano Soso, who approved the hiring of Lucas Lima, says the director.

“From a sporting perspective, he comes from two seasons with more than 50 games a year, with high minutes. Therefore, showing that he is an important player. All these aspects were validated by Mariano (Soso) and his team, who promptly approved the hiring of Lucas”, he adds.

Since leaving Sport after the end of Série B in 2013, Lucas Lima has experienced ups and downs in his career. He played for Santos, where he had moments of protagonism, including reaching the Brazilian team, and also defended Palmeiras and Fortaleza. Last season, which culminated in Peixe’s relegation, he played 50 games, scored two goals and provided ten assists.

Although he is viewed with suspicion by some, Lucas Lima arrives at Sport under great expectations from management, who understand that the player can return to his best days playing for Leão.

“Lucas Lima is an athlete of undeniable technical quality, with a high level of professionalism. All the clubs he has been to, and we look for this reference, highlight the athlete’s commitment to the established objectives and obligations. Our expectation is that he will be able to express his best football this season here at Sport”, explains Guilherme Falcão.

Lucas Lima arrived in Recife last Friday night and is already starting work to make himself available to Mariano Soso as soon as possible. In his first spell, in 2013, the player scored nine goals and provided six assists in 53 matches, in addition to being a key player in accessing Serie A.
