The Blaugranas have hired eight different coaches in 12 years, making their dream job seem increasingly difficult
After the rest of the Barcelona team left the field, Pep Guardiola turned, walked towards the center circle and took one last look at the Camp Nou. He blew a kiss to the fans and gave one last wave as coach of the Catalan club. There weren’t many tears, the legendary trainer looked relieved as he left his fortress for the last time.
The 100,000 culés present in that stadium might have suspected that things would never be the same again, but they certainly didn’t know how bad it would get. Barça have hired eight coaches in the 12 years since Guardiola left.
Yes, there were trophies – including five LaLiga titles – but none of the coaches who took charge truly integrated themselves into the culture like Guardiola. The club itself became increasingly unstable, bordering on bankruptcy.
And now, with Xavi leaving at the end of the current campaign, they face another reset. Barça will soon welcome a new coach with new ideas, but Xavi’s successor will likely face the same problems that have plagued many of those who came before him.
Managing Barcelona, it seems, has become an impossible task. Accepting the proposal to coach the team, despite the size of the club, seems like a stupid decision.
