The team lost both matches on the first day

The captain of the national tennis team, Rui Machado, recognized this Friday Finland’s superiority over Portugal (2-0) in the qualifying round for the Davis Cup World Group, which ends on Saturday at the Gatorade Center, in Turku.

The team captained by Jarkko Nieminen leads the match, after Nuno Borges (47th in the world) lost today’s first singles match against Otto Virtanen (166th), with scores of 6-2 and 6- 1, and João Sousa (245th) gave in to Emil Ruusuvuori (55th), by 6-2 and 6-3.

“Today the Finnish team was much better than us in both matches. We approached today with a lot of ambition and were prepared to take advantage of the opportunities, but in reality we didn’t have any opportunities and we weren’t able to play at the same level as our opponents” , assessed Machado, speaking to Lusa.

Despite the disadvantage on the scoreboard, the tie has not yet been decided, and Rui Machado believes that the pairs meeting, scheduled for Saturday, will be essential for the outcome of the confrontation that will qualify the winning team for the Davis Cup Finals.

“It remains to prepare for tomorrow [sábado] and the team to try to raise their level and keep up with their opponents. I know that our team is mentally prepared, is very professional and, if we have the opportunity, we will take advantage. So tomorrow [sábado] we will maintain parity and a victory at par changes the mood of both teams and leaves the tie completely open. The first objective is this, to beat the pair”, he highlighted.

For the doubles challenge, the captain of the Portuguese team chose Francisco Cabral (49th in the pairs ranking) and Nuno Borges (221st), who will face Harri Heliovaara (31st) and Patrik Niklas-Salminen (124 .º).

For the last two singles matches, after the doubles, Borges is expected to face Ruusuvuori and Sousa will play with Virtanen, a strategy that can be changed by either captain, depending on the results of the previous challenge.

“It will depend a little on how the match goes and the result, obviously. But when I have players like Nuno, João, Gastão [Elias] and even Henry [Rocha]If necessary, I know they will all perform at a great level. But for now, let’s play the pair and then we’ll see what’s going to be played next”, concluded Rui Machado.

In what is the third round against Finland (1-1), the semi-finalist nation of the Davis Cup Finals in 2023, Portugal is trying for the fifth time in history to reach the final stage of the Davis Cup, after having failed to do so against Croatia in 1994, Germany in 2017, Kazakhstan in 2019 and the Czech Republic a year ago.
