F1: According to British newspaper, Ricciardo could go to Mercedes in 2025

February 2, 2024 09:20

A year ago, Daniel Ricciardo was preparing for a season off the track after his forced departure from McLaren after the 2022 Formula 1 season. The Australian was coming from a difficult period in the British team and lost his place to Oscar Piastri. No other team seemed interested in having him as their starting driver, but Red Bull welcomed him as a reserve.

An unexpected chance arose thanks to Nyck de Vries’ underwhelming performance, and Ricciardo returned to action with AlphaTauri (now Visa Cash App RB) midway through last season. Currently, the veteran driver is seen as a strong candidate to be Max Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull in 2025, and could replace Sergio Perez next year. Team boss Christian Horner doesn’t hide his interest in putting him in one of Red Bull’s cars.

But the announcement made yesterday about Lewis Hamilton moving from Mercedes to Ferrari in 2025 opens another door, a place for the Australian at Mercedes next year. “Daniel Ricciardo, who started last year as a reserve at Red Bull, but won a place at the then AlphaTauri thanks to good performances in some tests, may be being considered for a move to Mercedes,” stated the Daily Mail newspaper.

The surprise is big, as Ricciardo had recently stated his desire to remain at Red Bull. Will the chance to ride for another team with the potential to win speak louder? The 2024 season promises exciting new developments in the driver market, and Ricciardo’s name will certainly be involved in the speculation.
