In group 22, Matheus, 58th in the junior world rankings, only managed to defeat Bulgarian Ivan Kolev. On the other hand, the Brazilian ended up defeated by Kornel Pech, from Hungary, Nietali Koptleunov, from Uzbekistan, Moritz Schenkel, from Germany, Edoardo Reale, from Italy, and Roman Fraboulet, from France. Likewise, Thomas also left with just one victory in group 25, where he beat Frenchman Michel Choueiry.
Previously, two weeks ago, Matheus Becker competed in the Boston stage of the Junior World Cup, in the United States. On that occasion, the 19-year-old fencer advanced to the knockout stages of the competition. He fell in the first round of the main table, losing the duel to Ukrainian Andrii Slastin. Another Brazilian who fell in the decisive dispute was Renato Saliba, stopping the American Cody Walter Ji, currently fourth in the world rankings.
After the pool stage, the Plovdiv stage moved on to the knockout matches. The victor was William Morrill, from the United States. Firstly, he surpassed Bolivian Julian Mayer. Afterwards, the athlete defeated Evann Jean Abba Girault, from Niger. After eliminating Ukrainian Tymur Terzi, William joined the main knockout stage.
In the round of 16, Morrill beat compatriot Jordan Silberzweig. Later, he passed the Italian Edoardo Cantini and the Spanish Santiago Madrigal until reaching the tournament’s final. Finally, the fencer from the United States became champion over Zuhriddin Kodirov, from Uzbekistan.
