The Football Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Ferj) decided to innovate and asked Vasco and Flamengo for help to decide the referee for Sunday’s classic, at 7pm (Brasília time) at Maracanã, in a game valid for the sixth round of the Carioca Championship. Four names were presented at a meeting with the two clubs this Friday afternoon at the entity’s headquarters, and the chosen one was Wagner do Nascimento Magalhães.
Marcelo Vianna, from Ferj, explains meeting with Vasco and Flamengo to define arbitration
The VAR will be Rodrigo Nunes de Sá (VAR), and his assistant, Bruno Arleu de Araújo. All names were defined by consensus between the clubs. If more than one referee was chosen, there would be a draw open to the press. Flamengo was represented by president Rodolfo Landim, executive director of football, Bruno Spindel, and director of external relations, Cacau Cotta. Alexandre Mattos, executive director of football, and Clauber Rocha, supervisor, attended from Vasco.
– Four referees who are from Ferj’s top shelf, there was almost a consensus to nominate both Bruno Arleu and Wagner. In Bruno’s impossibility, understanding the magnitude of the classic, of a weight like this, the need for experienced referees to the detriment of younger ones – declared Rocha.
– I think the transparency of the process is commendable. The names were chosen by consensus and are also the opinion of the technical area of Ferj’s arbitration department, which was also heard. We asked that the referee be reassured, who is very experienced, used to dealing with pressure in a classic of this size – reinforced Spindel, who considered Vasco’s meetings with Ferj as normal after some refereeing errors in the first rounds.
Vasco felt harmed on more than one occasion. After the draw with Bangu, in the fourth round, he formalized a request for the referee to never referee his games again. In the defeat to Nova Iguaçu, in the last round, the federation itself informed at the end of the game that the match referee would be removed from the rosters.
