Fernando Alonso has revealed his desire to remain in Formula 1 beyond 2024, pointing to a recovery in his motivation since his move to Aston Martin which took place at the start of 2023.
Taking advantage of the moment in which Aston Martin consolidated itself as Red Bull’s main competitor in the first races of 2023, where Alonso achieved six podiums in the first eight races, this momentum encouraged the Spaniard. Despite the team’s subsequent drop in performance and fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, the two-time F1 champion’s impressive consistency left him fourth in the drivers’ standings, with two further podiums at Zandvoort and Interlagos.
ALonso’s current contract with ASton Martin runs until the end of this year, but the Spaniard made it clear in a DAZN documentary, titled ‘Revealed: Fernando’, that he is considering extending his F1 career. He described the 2023 season as his best since 2012 and highlighted Aston Martin’s positive impact on his motivation.
Alonso: “The incredible year I had with Aston Martin, the podiums, the celebrations, the motivation again. Because every athlete needs results to stay motivated. And for me, it was a fresh start in terms of motivation and desire,” he said.
Speaking about the image of himself on the podium, Alonso shared that it is these moments that fuel his continued determination to compete. Although he cannot guarantee a repeat of last season’s successes, he expressed confidence in the energy and enthusiasm within the Aston Martin team.
“I am confident that 2024 will be a good year. I can’t promise results, but I feel good energy to continue evolving with the team, with Aston Martin. It’s a positive energy for motorsport”, said the driver.
Alonso, without a win since 2013, highlighted that doubts about his move to Aston Martin were dispelled during a post-season test in Abu Dhabi in 2022. Although he does not guarantee future success, he is enthusiastic about the team’s spirit.
“I don’t know if the success will be maintained this year, but I’m sure the team is motivated and hungry for victories. It’s a young team, full of enthusiasm. This attitude, I believe, will be crucial to staying positive throughout the year. I hope the success continues”, concluded the experienced Spanish driver.
