Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi will continue in Formula 1 this year. The driver was kept as a Haas reserve for the 2024 season, alongside young British driver Oliver Bearman, just 18 years old. They will be an option for the starting duo, formed by German Nico Hülkenberg and Danish Kevin Magnussen.
With the announcement, Pietro will be in his sixth season as a Haas reserve. The Brazilian’s permanence in this role was in doubt because he agreed to be a starter for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team, in Formula Indy, this year. Furthermore, the American team unexpectedly fired Günter Steiner, head of Haas, who is very close to Pietro.
“I am happy and proud to be heading into my sixth season with Haas. I look forward to continuing our work in developing and supporting the team as best we can throughout the 2024 season,” commented the grandson of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
The 27-year-old driver competed in two F1 races for Haas, both in the final stretch of the 2020 season. On that occasion, he replaced Frenchman Romain Grosjean in the Bahrain and Abu Dhabi GPs. Grosjean was unable to compete in these races because he was recovering from a serious accident suffered during training in Bahrain. In recent years, Pietro has also taken to the track in pre-season tests and in free practice at GPs.
“Having Pietro with us for a sixth season is invaluable as he again continues his contributions to our program over the years, both on and off the track. We are thrilled that he has secured a full-time stint at IndyCar this season , so he can do what he loves to do – and that is racing, but he is also there for us as part of the Haas family,” commented new Haas boss Ayao Komatsu.
