Thiago Monteiro finished runner-up in the Montevideo challenger, in Uruguay. After a great week in the tournament, the Brazilian suffered a hand injury and had to withdraw during the final match against Facundo Diaz Acosta, when his opponent was leading 6/3 4/3. Champion in Campinas a few weeks ago, this was the Brazilian’s second decision of the year.
“It was a very good week here, very positive. What happened is that, at one point during the game, I slipped a little and ended up bending my hand as I fell. I strained my thumb, maybe it was a ligament or a crack in my bones, but I’ll only know when I arrive in Brasília and do the complete exams. Theoretically I still have the Brasília tournament to play, so, depending on the exams, I’ll see if there’s time to recover”, explained Thiago.
The performance in the tournament resulted in a rise in the ranking for the tennis player, who jumped from 131st to 117th place in this Monday’s ranking update. Now, Thiago awaits the results of the exams to decide whether he will compete in the Brasília challenger, the last tournament on his 2023 calendar.
