Welterweight champion (77 kg), Leon Edwards will have the mission of leading the last numbered Ultimate card in the 2023 season, in a duel that puts his belt on the line against the challenger Colby Covington.
And, even with a fight of this magnitude on the horizon, ‘Rocky’, as he is known, is already making bold plans for the course of his career. The main one involves testing himself among the middleweights (84 kg) and eventually becoming the first representative from England to become a double UFC champion.
In an interview with the channel ‘Sky Sports‘, Edwards admitted that also shining in the top category would be the ideal scenario he projects for the future.
Keeping an eye on the movements of the under-84 kg division, the English athlete opens the door to a possible fight against the winner of Sean Strickland It is Dricus Du Plessiswho face off for the middleweight title in January 2024.
“100%. I feel like that would be perfect (becoming double champion). Me going there, becoming double champion, the first in English history to do that, is definitely one of my goals.
It’s in the (goal) booklet, for sure. Either one of them (Strickland and Dricus) would be amazing for me to face. There is no one that is exciting in this category (welterweight), so for me to go there (at middleweight) and do that, it would be perfect”, declared Leon.
Best phase of career
Leon’s confidence to achieve great feats is justified by his favorable record. Without knowing what it’s like to lose since 2015, the English athlete is on a streak of 12 unbeaten fights – the best record of his career as an MMA professional.
