Abel praises refereeing after Palmeiras’ defeat to Flamengo: “Excellent”

O Palm trees lost 3-0 to Flamengo, this Wednesday, at Maracanã. Verdão ended the game with one less, as Gustavo Gómez ended up being sent off at the beginning of the second half. Despite the loss, coach Abel Ferreira praised the refereeing of Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima, who refereed the game.

“I really like this referee. For me, he is the referee who has the best form in Brazilian football, he is not afraid to blow the whistle, wherever, whatever. I think that whoever is in charge has to look at the younger players, at those who have the courage to leave that circuit that exists. In my opinion, it is excellent arbitration. Value that”, he said at a press conference.

Since his arrival at Palmeiras in 2020, Abel has been the target of criticism for “going beyond the point” in his complaints with arbitration. This time, despite the defeat and the “hot head” about the result, the coach positively recognized the referee’s work.

More than a month ago, the coach was involved in a controversy with refereeing after shouting at Bruno Arleu de Araujo. At the time, he was reported by the STJD and served a two-game suspension.

This season, the referee of Flamengo x Palmeiras refereed other Verdão games. The first was the goalless draw with Internacional, at Beira-Rio, and the other, Alviverde’s victory over Bahia, at Allianz Parque.

Palmeiras returns to the field next Saturday, when they host Internacional, at Arena Barueri, in a duel valid for the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship, at 9 pm (Brasília time).
