On the eve of the most important fight of his MMA career, Tom Aspinall admitted that he thought about retiring after the serious knee injury suffered in the 2022 season. The injury, which kept him away from the octagon for a year, made the athlete question his continued existence in the sport. In an interview with ‘Full Circle‘, a page linked to a betting house, the combatant narrated the drama he experienced.

“It’s depressing. Absolutely horrible. It made me want to quit the sport for a moment. For a few days, I didn’t want to continue. I broke down and renounced everything. It’s terrible to fall in front of 22 thousand people, in your city, with your fans watching, with your knee ‘blown out’ and unable to move. (…) I should go to Poland (after the fight), see my family and friends. My wife and my children were there. I had to cancel, go to London and recover for a year. It wasn’t ideal,” Aspinall said.

Despite the drama, Tom managed to recover. Fully recovered from the episode that occurred in the confrontation against Curtis Blaydesthe athlete returned to the octagon a year later and massacred Marcin Tybura.

The triumph gave back the Englishman’s confidence, who remained in a prominent position in the heavyweight division (up to 120.2kg). Months later, with the serious injury of Jon JonesAspinall ended up being accredited to compete for the interim division title against Sergei Pavlovich.
