The 2023/24 Champions League began to have its knockout stage drawn, with some teams guaranteeing a place in the round of 16 at the end of the fourth round of the group stage. Manchester City and RB Leipzig were the first to qualify, on Tuesday, and Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Inter Milan also secured a place in the next phase this Wednesday.
In group A, Bayern Munich reached 10 points and can no longer be caught by Galatasaray and Copenhagen. In C, Real Madrid now has 12 points, remaining unreachable by Braga and Union Berlin.
Group D has already had its two classifieds defined: Real Sociedad and Inter Milan will now only decide who will go through first, with Salzburg and Benfica eliminated. It is the same case in group G, which has Manchester City and RB Leipzig assured as the top two, with no definition of who will advance as leader.
The top two teams from each of the eight Champions League groups advance to the round of 16. A draw on December 18th will define the clashes, placing the teams in two different pots: one with the first placed teams in each group, and the other with the second placed teams.
There are two restrictions in the round of 16: teams that come from the same group cannot face each other, nor can teams from the same country. From the quarterfinals onwards, there are no more restrictions: all teams can face each other, with the path defined through a new draw.
The Champions 2023/24 round of 16 will be held on the 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st of February, with the first matches, and on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th of March, with the return matches.
