Vice for the third time in a row (2012, 2018 and now), the Argentine team is not guaranteed qualification for next year’s Libertadores. Now, they will play the final stretch of the year with three possibilities to guarantee their place and avoid the embarrassment of being left out of the biggest club tournament in South American football.
To go to the 2024 Libertadores, Boca needs to achieve one of the three achievements below:
– be champion of the Copa Argentina (they are in the semi-finals, against Estudiantes de La Plata)
– finish the Argentine Championship in the classification zone (they have 55 points, three less than Defensa y Justicia and three games before the end of the season)
– win the League Cup (current campaign is six points below the playoff zone, closed by Racing, with 17 points)
If the Bombonera club is still going to sweat to go to the next Libertadores, another 16 teams are guaranteed qualification. The only Argentine confirmed for now is River Plate, current national champion. From Brazil, only Fluminense and São Paulo are on the list.

There are, therefore, 31 places to be filled for the next Libertadores, counting not only the teams that will go directly to the group stage, but also those that will play in the previous stages.
Brazil will have eight representatives in the tournament (the six open places will come from the Brazilian championship), while Argentina will feature five teams in addition to River Plate. The other countries will be represented by four clubs, with the exception of Ecuador, thanks to LDU’s title in the CONMEBOL South American.
