Bahian tennis players win titles in one of the main youth tennis competitions in the country

Nathalia Tourinho, granddaughter of the tournament’s creator, is champion in the women’s 14 years, and Victor Rocha takes the trophy in the men’s doubles event at Clube Bahiano de Tênis

Two athletes from Bahia stood out and were champions of their categories in the 38th edition of the Bahia Juniors Cupwhich took place last Saturday (4) at Bahiano Tennis Clubin the Graça neighborhood, in Salvador. Nathalia Tourinho won the trophy in the female 14 years old category and also in doubles, while Victor Rocha He was champion in men’s doubles.

Nathalia Tourinho she achieved a double 6/0 over rival Mariana Ramos in the singles and, subsequently, won the doubles alongside Paola Polese. “Playing here in Bahia is very special because my entire family, father and mother, are from here. So I stay at my grandparents’ house, family and friends will all cheer for me, so the atmosphere couldn’t be better. And the tournament being at Bahiano Tennis is even better because my parents grew up playing tennis and representing the club their entire lives. And winning the tournament designed by my grandfather so many years ago is a source of great happiness. I’m really very happy”said Nathalia, who is the daughter of Luis Tarquiniocreator of the traditional tournament.

In men’s doubles, Victor Rocha was champion alongside João Bonini by defeating Gustavo Albieri and Henrique Brito in the final by a double 7/5.

This year, the competition broke a record in this edition with 350 athletes from seven countries (Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Jamaica). The Bahia Juniors Cup has already hosted big names in Brazilian tennis, such as Gustavo Kuerten, known as Guga, champion in the 16 years old category, in 1993 in an epic final against Bahia’s Duda Catharino, today the director of the event.

“The Bahia Juniors Cup is always a pleasure to hold because the Bahia Tennis Federation sees this tournament as a motivator for local tennis players, as a showcase for Bahian tennis players and it is a great breeding ground for champions, it moves partner clubs and it is always good make Salvador the capital of Brazilian, South American and world tennis. The competition broke a record in this edition with 350 athletes from seven countries (Brazil, Netherlands, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Jamaica) covering all categories from the world cup up to 18 years old, including the South American Cosat (16 and 14 years old) and the Brazilian (12 years old).

O Bahia Juniors Cup is responsible for revealing great talents in Brazilian tennis. In recent years, João Fonseca was the 2021 champion and recently won the US Open title. In 2017, Thiago Wild lifted the trophy in the final against Sebastian Baez. He won the US Open for youth the following year and is now among the top 80 in the professional rankings. Sebastian Baez was runner-up in the same edition and is now among the 30 in the world in professional competition.

The Bahia Juniors Cup has already revealed other big names in national tennis such as Gustavo Kuerten, champion in the 16 years old category, in 1993 in an epic final against Bahia’s Duda Catharino, today the director of the event. Other names that attended the event were Fernando Meligeni, Marcelo Melo and Teliana Pereira.

The event was endorsed by the International Tennis Federation, the South American Tennis Confederation, the Brazilian Tennis Confederation and the Bahian Tennis Federation.
