A McLaren is, without a doubt, one of the biggest stories of the 2023 season of Formula 1. From a complicated start, always falling in Q1 of the classification, the team Woking advanced until becoming a real candidate for podiums and poles in this final stretch. A development that, according to Pierre Gaslyis unmatched in the last decade.
After occupying the last positions in the Constructors’ World Championship at the beginning of the championship, the British team has experienced dizzying growth, now reaching fourth place in the standings, recently surpassing the Aston Martin.
Without major advances in the 2023 season, Alpine saw its rival overtake it without difficulty. And McLaren’s current performance surprised Gasly.
“I would say there are two surprises in the season,” said Gasly when asked by Motorsport.com about variations in team performance in 2023. “One is McLaren, because the development they’ve had, I don’t remember seeing anything like that in the last 10 years.”
“I don’t remember a team that went from [cair no] Q1 in the first five races to fight for pole position in 10 races. So it’s been absolutely stunning and surprising.”
On the other side of the coin, the Frenchman reveals a negative surprise with Aston Martin: “They started the year with a good performance, I wouldn’t imagine seeing them where they are at this point in the season”.
“So yes… there were two very big variations. We kind of always stayed in the middle, not fighting the people in front of us. So it’s been a surprise.”
