-

The path of Bia Haddad and Thiago Monteiro in the main draw of Roland Garros 2023 was defined this Thursday (25). In a draw held by the organization of the tournament, the Brazilians met their opponents in the first round of the competition, as well as the starting lineup for possible clashes.

Recovered after leg discomfort suffered during the Rome Masters 1000, Bia Haddad will face Germany’s Tatjana Maria in France’s Grand Slam debut. Maria is 35 years old and is currently ranked number 64 in the WTA. Meanwhile, Haddad is 50 positions above the same list, with the 14th place.

If she confirms her favoritism, Bia will face the winner of the confrontation between Canadian Rebecca Marino (79th) and Russian Diana Shnaider (107th). Next, a possible match between rankings could happen in the third round against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, number 23 in the world.

Like Bia, Thiago Monteiro also arrives at Roland Garros after recovering from an injury. The best Brazilian ranked in the ATP, with position 96, felt his left elbow in Cagliari’s Challenger earlier this month. After that, Monteiro still competed in the Masters 1000 in Rome and the ATP 250 in Geneva.

At Roland Garros 2023, Monteiro will face Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the first round. The local tennis player is in position 65 in this season’s ATP ranking. This will be the third time the two meet on the professional circuit. The duels took place last year. In Winston-Salem, Bonzi got the upper hand in the Round of 16. However, the Brazilian came back in round 32 in Gijón.
