Geneva (Switzerland) – With a great performance on the serve, Nicolas Jarry starred in the surprise round this Thursday at the ATP 250 in Geneva. The Chilean shot 12 aces in the victory over Norwegian Casper Ruud, number 4 in the world and current two-time champion of the tournament, with partials of 3/6, 7/6 (7-2) and 7/5.
After a first set with just one break, in favor of Ruud, Jarry faced no break-points in the second partial and conceded only three points in his service games. The Chilean won the partial tiebreak and managed two breaks in the last set to reach victory.
At the age of 27, Jarry occupies the 54th place in the ATP ranking and has a career best of 38th place. It marked his fifth top 10 win and first of the season. His opponent in the semi will be the German Alexander Zverev, 27th in the ranking, against whom he has a victory and two defeats.
Zverev was on the court for just 21 minutes on Thursday. The German was benefited by the retirement of the Chinese Yibing Wu, who withdrew when losing by 4-1, due to an injury in the posterior of the left thigh. Winner of 19 ATP titles, Zverev is 26 years old and looking for his first final of the season and 31st on the tour.
Fritz and Dimitrov in the other semifinal in Geneva
On the other side of the key, tournament seed Taylor Fritz won another one and secured a spot in the semi. The American edged out Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-2. Fritz, 25 years old and number 9 in the world, has five ATP titles and is looking for an 11th final.
Fritz’s opponent will be the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who beat the Australian Christopher O’Connell by 6/7 (5-7), 7/5, 6/4. Former number 3 in the world, Dimitrov is 32 years old and occupies the 33rd place in the ranking. The Bulgarian has eight titles and seven runners-up in his career, but has not played in a final since 2018. Fritz won the only previous duel against Dimitrov, played on clay in Madrid in 2019.
