Champion of the Rome Masters, in Italy, last week, the Russian Daniil Medvedev spoke with the French website Tennis Major and spoke about the secrets that helped him to improve his performance on clay to reach his greatest title on this surface.
“It’s not because I’m sponsored by Lacoste or Tecnifibre that I’m going to say this; I think the ropes help me, the new ropes I tried this year, because they are softer, so the ball goes easier.”
“Right away in Australia, actually, where I lost, with my coach, we thought, ‘Wow, I have easy depth on the ball, which is amazing.’ In Australia, it didn’t work. I was 100% doubting myself. Should I go back to the old ones, was I playing nice with that? I said no let’s try more. Now it’s unbelievable,” he began his analysis.
The Russian was then asked if the new model of sneakers he has been using, and it is from his clothing sponsor, made a difference, Medvedev scored: “About my movement (legs), it is either training or new sneakers. Maybe I’m feeling better with them. I managed to have time, managed to move well and hit the deep ball. It sounds easy, but this is the hardest part of tennis. You want to play deep and you miss. That’s what happened to me in previous years.”
And he continued: “Here (Rome) this week I managed to do everything in my head. I managed to make it real. That’s how I managed to win.”
