The crushing performance of Khamzat Chimaev before Kevin Holland at the UFC 279 brought relief to Dana White. About two weeks after the performance of the show, the president of Ultimate ‘celebrated’ the cancellation of the clash between the Swede and Nate Diaz, who would star in the event. In an interview with podcast ‘The Action Junkeez‘, the representative explained his position.
“After you watch the fight (between Chimaev and Holland), you understand that the initial duel would not be good. I know the fans were annoyed with Khamzat for not making weight. But oh my, did you see the picture that Holland posted the next day, his eyes red from the strangulation?” White said.
To fulfill the last commitment in his contract with Ultimate, Diaz was chosen to face the big bet for the future of the organization. With the failure with the scale, the ‘bad boy‘ ended up staring Tony Ferguson and bested the veteran with a submission in the fourth round.
Prior to the cancellation, there were concerns about a possible technical imbalance between Nate and Khamzat. While the 37-year-old American was having an unstable moment in MMA, the Swede is at his peak, undefeated in his career in the sport and aiming for a title dispute in the welterweight division (up to 77kg.).
