Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton doesn’t find it worrying that Max Verstappen and Red Bull are now at the top of Formula 1. The Brit hopes to be competitive again soon with Mercedes but isn’t worried about things out of his control.

“Although we worry about things we can’t control, you have to try to learn not to,” Hamilton said in conversation with Racer. “I watch other sports, and I wish it was just the sheer skill I have that made all the difference.”

However, that is not the case in F1, and Hamilton knows it. It’s a lot more about the performance of the car and the whole team you’re on at that moment.

It’s frustrating for Hamilton and his team that no wins have been won in 2022, but the seven-time champion also puts that in perspective. “It’s definitely difficult. But I don’t really like the word ‘difficult’, because I’ve just been to Africa, and I’ve seen kids who have absolutely nothing, so nothing is really that difficult,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say it bothers, we all know what it can be. We would love to be in this race fighting, and I would like all the cars to be much closer together and we would all have a much better fight near the front of the grid.”

Hamilton has another tough race in 2022, because aside from the fact that his car isn’t good enough to compete for the win, he also has a bigger challenge within the team than he did until last year. Although the seven-time champion won the qualifying duel with George Russell (9-7 and an average gap of 0.035s), in races Russell has scored 35 points more than Hamilton so far this season.
