Finnish Valtteri Bottas doesn’t know if he will follow Fernando Alonso’s example, racing in Formula 1 at age 41, but says he would ‘never say never’, to a different path in motorsport, when he retires from F1.

Since the start of 2022 at Alfa Romeo, the 33-year-old Bottas has a three-year contract with the team. Until last year he was Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at Mercedes, but was replaced by George Russell this season.

This team change and the pre-set contract gave the ten-time GP winner the security he wanted in his Formula 1 career, this being the first contract he has in F1, which lasts more than a year.

Talking about the future, Bottas replied to the Italian edition of Motorsport.com, when asked if he would follow Alonso’s example: “I’m not sure. I’m very impressed with Fernando’s performance, he’s still at a very good level, but as for me I don’t know, so I say, ‘Never say never’.”

“I am absolutely open to any challenge. I love riding and I was able to find motivation in many other contexts. I believe that the day my Formula 1 adventure ends, I will continue racing in other categories. The only condition will be to find something that gives me more free time,” he said.

A part of the Finn’s mission when moving to Alfa Romeo was to lead the team alongside rookie Zhou Guanyu, with Bottas being cast as the team’s number one driver after five seasons working in the background for Hamilton at Mercedes.

He believes he jumped at the opportunity, having taken a different approach with Alfa Romeo this season.

“It was a natural transition considering my teammate is a rookie. He’s obviously asked me a lot of things over the course of the season and I was happy to be able to help,” Bottas said.

“In terms of my role in the team, coming from Mercedes, I put what I learned in a top team at my disposal and it was gratifying for me to be able to do my part, and put myself at the disposal of the team.”

Perhaps Bottas would have expected a little better performance in 2022, but the current Alfa Romeo car doesn’t allow for much more than a fight in the Formula 1 midfield.
