Recent United States (US) airstrikes on targets in Iraq on Friday unleashed a trail of destruction and death. According to Iraqi government sources, at least 16 people were killed and another 25 were injured during the US military operation.
Akashat area and Al-Qaim city affected
The massive attacks took place in the Akashat region and the city of Al-Qaim, both close to the Iraqi border with Syria. The official statement from the Iraqi government details that the affected areas include places where the country’s security forces were positioned, as well as nearby civilian locations.
Iraq denounces “aggression against sovereignty”
In reaction to the US military onslaught, the Iraqi government denounced the operation as an affront to its national sovereignty. At the same time, authorities in Anbar, the province affected by the attacks, reported that the military targets included headquarters used by militias linked to Iran, known as Popular Mobilization Units or Hashad al Shaabi.
Denied the US statement
In light of the allegations, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby claimed that the Iraqi government was previously informed about the operation. However, this statement was promptly refuted by Iraq, which accuses the US of propagating “mistakes and distortions of facts” in international public opinion.
Repercussions of the military operation
In addition to the deaths and injuries, the fact could have more serious implications for the security of the region. According to the official Iraqi statement, this US aggression could lead the security situation in Iraq itself and throughout the region to a state of complete uncertainty, threatening efforts to establish the necessary stability in the area. Considering the scenario, the near future appears uncertain and possibly turbulent.
