Dengue: 25% of cities that will have a vaccine did not register cases in 2024

-

Amid the spread of dengue fever in the country, the Ministry of Health will distribute 5.2 million doses of the vaccine against the disease to 521 municipalities. A survey of the Metropolises shows that, among the cities covered, 130 have not registered cases since the beginning of 2024.

In 13 cities covered, such as Mari and Riachão do Poço, both in Paraíba, the number of cases was equal to zero also in 2023. Furthermore, 321 municipalities had less than 10 probable cases in the first weeks of the year, which is equivalent to 61 .6%.

The data was collected from the Ministry of Health’s Arbovirus Monitoring Panel on February 2. The first shipment of vaccines, with around 757 thousand doses of Qdenga, arrived in Brazil on January 20. Another shipment, with more than 568 thousand doses, is scheduled for delivery in February. Applications should begin next week.

According to the Ministry of Health, the locations chosen to receive the doses were regions with large municipalities and high transmission of the disease in the last ten years, in addition to having a population equal to or greater than 100 thousand inhabitants. Cities that had high rates in recent months were also taken into consideration.

In total, 16 states and the Federal District will receive doses of Qdenga, which prevents the severe form of the four serotypes of the disease. Due to the reduced number of doses, the vaccine will only be applied to children and adolescents between 10 and 14 years old. The government’s expectation is to vaccinate 3.2 million people in this first phase.

The 521 benefiting municipalities concentrate 90,948 cases of the disease. Federal District, Acre and Minas Gerais are the federation units with the highest incidence per 100 thousand inhabitants in Brazil.

As of this Friday (2/2), Brazil had registered 262,247 probable cases of the disease, in addition to 29 confirmed deaths and 173 under investigation.
