Several evictions and eruptions later, Deception Island was declared a land of peace and research.
Under the worried eyes of researchers about possible interference in their work, thousands of tourists also arrive on cruises, a phenomenon “increasing worryingly”, says historian and master in geography Natalia Jaramillo, scientific coordinator of the expedition.
Although there are much lower temperatures on Mars, down to -153°C, according to the American space agency (NASA), De Pablo is convinced of the contribution to science and to a humanity that looks to outer space.
In 2023, NASA researchers concluded that Mars had, at some point, a climate with cyclical seasons, conducive to the development of life, according to deductions from evidence found on the “Red Planet” by the exploring robot Curiosity.
Furthermore, they support the hypothesis that an immense volcanic eruption changed its atmosphere and led to the appearance of oceans and rivers that later evaporated.
“Antarctic conditions can help us understand whether, on Mars, the conditions for the development of life can happen, or could have happened”, it is about “understanding how life adapts to such extreme conditions generated by both volcanic activity as well as the cold”, says De Pablo.
