Amid the start of recording for the second season of the series, the showrunner and director of the The Last of Us, Neil Druckmannseems to have opened the door for The Last of Us Part III in games. This, of course, would mean more seasons of the adaptation on HBO.
In a speech in the documentary Groundedwhich tells the game’s production process and is available on YouTube, Druckmann let it slip that, after a long time, he found a possibility for the sequel.
“I was wondering if there was a concept (for the sequel). For years, I couldn’t come up with a concept. But recently that changed. I don’t have a story yet, but I have a concept that excites me as much as 1 and 2. It’s something own, but there’s a thread that connects all three. It seems like there’s probably a new chapter to this story,” he declared.
“The first game has a clear concept, of a father’s love for his daughter. In the second, we seek justice at any cost for those you love, and a thread that connects to the first, which is love. If we never do anything, It’s a good ending”, declared the director.
“The great thing about working at Naughty Dog is that while we’d love to have a new The Last of Us, if we don’t have the desire to do it, we don’t have to. It’s a very privileged position to be in,” he added.
Meanwhile, production of the second season of the series HBO is underway, with recordings starting in February.
Originally released for PlayStation 3 in 2013, The Last of Us is a game that tells the story of Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler who is tasked with taking Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from one US coast to the other across a fungus-ravaged post-apocalyptic Earth full of zombie-like infected and dangerous factions. In the process, the two end up developing a relationship like father and daughter. Both marked by loss and trauma, they need to learn to trust each other to survive, and along the way they are forced to make tough and not always moral decisions to achieve this.
The HBO series is written and directed by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and participation by the director of Naughty Dog games, Neil Druckmann.
The second season is already confirmed, and will begin telling the story of The Last of Us Part II, the second game in the franchise. This, unlike the first game that occupied the entire first season, will be adapted into more than one season. Its debut should take place in 2025.
As for casting news, the second season has Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a soldier seeking revenge for those she loves, Isabella Merced as Dina, Ellie’s love interest, and Young Mazino like Jesse, with whom Dina has a past. The three characters are extremely important to the game’s story, and should be essential to the series as well.
The first season of The Last of Us is available on HBO Max.
