Federal District, Minas Gerais, Acre It is Paraná are the units of the federation with the highest incidence rates of dengue cases in Brazil, points out the epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health released this Friday (2).

You federal government data compile notifications up to epidemiological week 4, which ended on January 27th. In these first four weeks, we were notified 243,720 probable cases of dengue. During this period, Brazil had 24 deaths confirmed and 163 are under investigation.

“When compared to the same period in 2023, there is a 273% increase in the number of probable cases. The geographic regions where the highest incidence rates are found are the Central-West, Southeast and South”, states the Ministry of Health. The cases were registered in more than 3 thousand municipalities Brazilians.

Coefficient x absolute numbers

The current incidence coefficient is 120 cases/100 thousand inhabitants in the country. The coefficient is different from the absolute number: São Paulo has 39 thousand cases, but, proportionally in relation to the total population, the situation is more serious in Acre, which had less than 3 thousand notifications.

This Friday, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, stated that the city is experiencing a dengue epidemic. The municipality recorded 44.2% of dengue cases reported throughout last year in the month of January this year alone.

Federal government actions

On Thursday (1st), the Ministry of Health announced the creation of a emergency operations center to combat dengue. There will be the participation of representatives from states, municipalities and other ministries.

On another front, the Ministry of Defense made itself available to states to send military personnel to help combat dengue fever. The Federal District, which has seen a significant increase in the number of cases, has already asked for support from the military.

The advancement of dengue occurs amid expectation for the start of vaccination. The Ministry of Health reported that the distribution of vaccines to states is expected to begin next week.

This week the Butantan Institute published a study in a scientific journal that states that its single-dose vaccine is effective (79.6% effective against cases of the disease). The approval request must be sent to Anvisa this year and use could begin in 2025.
