The Ministry of Education (MEC) readjusted this Wednesday (31) the national minimum salary for basic education teachers. The ordinance, which provides for a increase of 3.62%was published in an extra edition of the “Official Gazette of the Union”.
O minimum value defined by the government for 2024 was BRL 4,580.57. In 2023, a floor of R$4,420.55 was in force.
This salary is valid for professionals who teach in public education network and comply working hours of at least 40 hours per week.
Updating teachers’ salaries is mandatory, based on a law enacted in 2008, and occurs annually, in January.
The percentage adjusted this Wednesday had already been awaited by education entities since the end of 2023, when the MEC and the Ministry of Finance published the adjustment of the Fundeb Year Student Value (VAAF).
This because the calculation of the floor update is based on the percentage difference of the VAAF of two previous ones. This year, the adjustment was calculated based on the values for 2022 (R$5,129.80) and 2023 (R$5,315.56).
The salary floor, which is the minimum amount that a certain professional category must earn, is defined by the federal government, but Salaries are paid by city halls and state governments.
O payment is not automatic. With the publication of the increase by the MEC, each state and municipality needs to formalize the new value through its own standard.
Basic education salaries are paid by city halls and states, using resources from the Fund for Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and Valorization of Education Professionals (Fundeb) transferred by the Union, in addition to tax collection.
