AliExpress, Shein and more: government sees drop in imports of up to US$50 and analyzes taxation

The Remessa Controle program has changed Brazilians’ international shopping habits and the government identified a drop in imports after charging ICMS on small-value shipments.

Therefore, technicians from the Ministry of Finance recommend “caution” in federal taxation of purchases below US$50, something much desired by Brazilian retailers. The preliminary diagnosis indicates a consistent drop in both the volume and revenue of imported products.

Furthermore, technicians also point out that Remessa Segundo has made consumers start buying these same low-cost products on the national market.

Therefore, a tax on purchases of up to US$50 could interfere with the regularization of foreign platforms, as they are seeing their sales fall.
