Residents of Rio de Janeiro were surprised by hail rain in some parts of the city, on the night of this Tuesday, 14th. The phenomenon occurred on the same day that the municipality broke heat recordwith the thermal sensation approaching 60ºC.
According to the Rio Alert System, from the city hall, at around 9:10 am, in Guaratiba, the thermal sensation was 58.5ºC. The value is the highest recorded since the system came into existence in 2014.
With night approaching, however, the scenario changed, and a storm hit several areas of the city, accompanied by lightning. At around 11pm, the Bangu neighborhood had recorded 53 mm of rain within an hour. Avenida Brasil scored 44.6 mm, and Anchieta, 26.6 mm.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) also recorded strong winds in the Copacabana region. There, gusts exceeded 40 km/h between 9 pm and 10 pm this Tuesday.
