The case took place at the Maria Amélia Buarque de Hollanda Municipal Maternity Hospital, in the center of Rio. The baby was found in Morro do Borel, in Tijuca, and returned to the mother.
A neighbor of Cauane made an anonymous complaint and UPP police officers from the Tijuca community went to her house. When they arrived at the residence, the police caught Cauane with Ravi on his lap. To the military, the young woman claimed to be pregnant and that the newborn was hers.
How was the kidnapping
According to Ravi’s father, Matheus Cunha, 26 years old, during the early hours of 10/31, just before 2am, his wife breastfed the baby and placed him in the crib. After dozing off quickly, she woke up and no longer saw him. The man reportedly looked for the infirmary and discovered that the baby was not there. Then the police were called.
To the newspaper Extra, the newborn’s paternal grandfather, Davi Figueira, 46, said that he woke up in the early hours of the morning to a call from his wife, who was accompanying his daughter-in-law to the maternity ward. According to the grandfather, images from security cameras recorded a woman entering the maternity ward with three bags, at around 1:50 am.
The woman appears with a backpack on her back and two bags, one in each hand. Officials believe that Cauane entered the maternity ward through one of the balconies and left through the front door with Ravi hidden in one of the bags.
